Everybody wants a brilliant white smile. People use stain removing mouthwash, brush with a whitening toothpaste, or even book an appointment with the dentist to whiten their teeth. But did you know that vegetables can help with smile teeth brightening too?


Onions are a bit of a catch 22. They won’t do much when cooked, but they will work on your teeth when eaten raw as the sulfur compounds will remove plaque. The only thing is, after eating them, you’ll have to brush your teeth with toothpaste to freshen your breath. On the other hand, cook or uncooked, onions contain chromium which heals infections, reduces inflammation and regulates blood sugar.


Carrots are powerhouses of goodness. Not only are they rich in antioxidants which fight cancer, reduce the risk of a stroke or heart attack, are excellent for your eyesight, they are smile teeth brightening too. Raw or cooked, carrots clean your teeth and strengthen your gums.


Broccoli is perhaps the most powerful teeth whitening vegetable. Those little green stems are rich in vitamins B, C and K and provide your body with folic acid, fiber, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and antioxidants. As you chew the broccoli, the stems and the flowers will not only whiten your teeth your whole body will benefit from this vegetable.

Other than vegetables, you can rely on fruits for smile teeth brightening too.


Apples are all around teeth, gum, and mouth cleaners. The fruit increases saliva in your mouth, which in turn washes away food remains. The acid in apples kills bad bacteria responsible for bad breath. Whenever possible, eat apples in their skin as the skin contains extra fiber that keeps teeth and gums healthy.


Strawberries might be bright red, but rather than stain your teeth, these berries contain malic acid, which is a natural astringent to remove stains from teeth and whiten the enamel. If you don’t like eating strawberries, you can turn a berry or two into a paste and brush with it.


Not only are oranges packed with vitamin C, which help fight colds and flu, oranges neutralize the acid in your mouth that can lead to tooth decay. Other than keeping your mouth healthy, oranges are recommended to keep your whole system in top form. Oranges give you a healthy complexion, boost your immunity, prevent heart disease, boost brain power, prevents cancer and stomach ulcers, and even prevents hair loss.


In addition to fruit and vegetables, nuts should be part of your diet as they work as exfoliators for your teeth. As you chew nuts, they scrape away food remains, thus preventing plaque which causes bad breath and can lead to tooth decay.


Milk and yogurt are not to be underestimated. The lactic acid in milk and yogurt fortify the enamel of teeth, which not only strengthens teeth but whitens them too.

If you eat vegetables for lunch or dinner, and snack on fruit and nuts during the day, you will be rewarded with a smile you can be proud of.
